One of MDP Engineering Group’s latest Hospitality projects, the Microtel by Wyndham Hotel Group, recently broke ground in Georgetown, Colorado. Georgetown is an historic silver mining town nestled in the Front Range about an hour west of the Denver Metro area, and consists of approximately 1000 year-round residents.  The small, charming borough draws crowds of tourists to its Victorian-era downtown and surrounding mountains, creating the need for more short-term lodging availability.

MDP Engineering Group is modifying the classic Wyndham brand to fit Georgetown’s mountain aesthetic. The Town of Georgetown requires rigorous modern energy codes in all new buildings, which creates the challenge of adhering to these contemporary sustainable energy requirements while maintaining the expected rustic aesthetic of a mountain town lodge.  Geared especially toward visitors, the Georgetown Microtel features smaller guest rooms with fewer amenities. The hotel does not feature a business center or fitness room, encouraging guests to spend their time exploring the great outdoors. Conveniently, however, the pool has been placed indoors to ensure year-round protection from the mountain elements. To support the overall interior design direction, among other design changes, MDP lowered the indoor lighting temperatures to mimic firelight instead of bright sunlight creating a cozy lodge feel. All features of the building, from indoor fixtures and building finishes, to the parking lot street lights, have been mindfully chosen for both their rustic appeal and energy efficiency.

The quick design-to-build timeline of this project has been feasible in part due to Microtel’s franchise template. Electrical engineer Eric Roberts, who has worked the Microtel project since its start in November 2017, notes MDP Engineering Group’s strong ability to “help franchised designs become a unique and desired extension of the surrounding area.” One of nearly twenty Wyndham brands, the Microtel line aims towards affordability and accessibility while still maintaining the expected Wyndham quality.
